I once read a story I would like to share with you.
There was a boy who loved the circus. He was mesmerized by the strength and power of the elephant, and perplexed by how that same elephant remained chained to a small stake when not performing, a stake the boy knew the elephant could easily pull from the ground. For years he searched for an answer and finally found one.
When little, the elephant was chained to a similar stake. He tried hard to pull it from the ground, but failed each time. One day, defeated, he gave up trying. From that day, he lived convinced that breaking free was impossible.
Many of us reach a point in our lives when we feel stuck, and as if we CAN’T do anything about it. Like the elephant, we are bound by beliefs about what we can and cannot do in our relationships, our jobs, or in going after our heart's desire. These beliefs, like stakes driven into the ground, keep us from venturing forward into fuller, more satisfying lives. We remain in situations that do not nurture us and our lives remain small--and often painful.
Therapy is a powerful way to uncover the many “stakes” to which we are chained. I believe that these painful places can be doorways into a deeper knowing of ourselves and a deeper freedom and joy. Through the gentle and non-judgmental, yet fiercely honest and brave process of therapy, we will challenge these beliefs about what you are capable of as they arise in our relationship. We will uncover the power and the strength within you that has been forgotten, and adopt new ways of relating. With great respect for where you have been, as well as appreciation for the courage and strength it takes to pull up the stakes and move forward, I will offer you my support, encouragement and experience. Together we can step through these doorways and into a life that truly inspires you.
